I didn’t expect Newport to feel quite so dramatic.
One minute I was driving along the Rhode Island coastline, and the next I was standing in front of mansions that looked more like palaces.
Newport is best known for its opulent Gilded Age mansions, once used as summer homes by some of America’s wealthiest families. Today, those same estates are open to the public, offering a fascinating glimpse into a lifestyle that was, frankly, wildly excessive.
What I loved most about Newport, though, was how easily it blends that history with natural coastal beauty. In just one day, you can wander through the town centre, walk along rugged ocean cliffs, and step inside palatial homes — all within a short driving distance.

How to get to Newport RI
Newport is an easy destination to access, particularly if you’re visiting from nearby cities. From Boston, it’s around a 1.5-hour drive, while from Providence it takes about 45 minutes. You can also catch a public bus from Providence to Newport.
As I was travelling from New York City, I chose to stay overnight in nearby Narragansett, and do a day trip to Newport using my rental car.
How to get around Newport
For this itinerary, having a car makes things much easier. Many of the key stops — including Fort Adams, Brenton Point and the mansions — are spread out along the coastline, and driving allows you to move between them at your own pace.
If you won’t have a car, a guided trolley tour is one of the easiest alternatives (and is one of the most popular things to do in Newport). I’d suggest choosing a tour that includes admission into one or two of the mansions. They’ll take you around Newport’s main highlights without needing to worry about parking or navigation, and include commentary along the way.

9:00 AM – Explore Newport town centre
Start your day in Newport by heading into the town centre for a relaxed wander and breakfast. This part of town is full of charming colonial-era buildings, and it’s easily one of the prettiest areas to stroll through.
I’d recommend starting around Bowen’s Wharf, where you’ll find a mix of small boutiques, waterfront views and cafés. From there, walk along Thames Street — this is where most of the restaurants, shops and galleries are located. I’d highly recommend stopping in at the Newport Fudgery for a sweet mid-morning treat!

11:00 AM – Visit Fort Adams
From the town centre, it’s about a 15-minute drive to Fort Adams, which is located at the entrance to Newport Harbor. The views towards Claiborne Pell/Newport Bridge are pretty neat from this spot, especially on a clear day.
Built around the time of the Civil War, the fort was designed to defend the US coastline and remained active through to World War II. Today, it’s a historic site that you can explore either independently from the outside or via a guided tour inside.
I’d recommend doing a guided tour if timing allows — it gives you access to the interior spaces and adds context that you simply wouldn’t get walking around on your own.

12:00 PM – Lunch at Castle Hill Inn
Just a few minutes from Fort Adams, Castle Hill Inn is easily one of the most scenic places to stop for lunch in Newport.
Set on a hill overlooking Narragansett Bay, this historic hotel has a restaurant with sweeping waterfront views. It’s known for its seafood, so this is the perfect opportunity to try local favourites like lobster, oysters or fresh fish.
It does lean toward the higher-end side, but the setting really makes it feel like part of the experience rather than just a meal.

1:00 PM – Brenton Point State Park
After lunch, continue along Ocean Drive toward Brenton Point State Park. This stretch of road is one of the most scenic parts of Newport, hugging the coastline with uninterrupted ocean views along the way.
Brenton Point itself is a peaceful open space where you’ll often see people relaxing on the grass. In the summer, the park hosts the Newport Kite Festival, where the sky fills with colourful kites. This is a long-running local event and a fun time to visit if your trip lines up with it.
As you wander through the park, you’ll also come across a few small landmarks, including the Ernest Coggeshall Monument and the Portuguese Discovery Monument, which add a bit of historical context to the setting.
You don’t need a huge amount of time here — even a short stop to take in the views is worthwhile.

2:00 PM – Cliff Walk
The Cliff Walk is one of Newport’s most famous attractions, and for good reason. This 3.5-mile coastal path runs alongside the ocean on one side and the backs of Newport’s grand mansions on the other.
While you can walk the full length, you definitely don’t need to — especially if you’re visiting as part of a one-day itinerary.
One of the easiest ways to experience it is to access the path near Easton’s Beach or from Marine Avenue, where there’s limited roadside parking. From there, you can walk a shorter section while still getting a feel for the dramatic coastal scenery.
Some parts of the path are smooth and easy, while others are a bit uneven and rocky, so it’s worth wearing comfortable shoes.

3:00 PM – Visit the Newport mansions
No trip to Newport is complete without visiting at least one of its famous mansions. These estates were built during the Gilded Age as summer homes for some of the wealthiest families in America — and they are, without exaggeration, incredibly extravagant.
If you’re short on time or only want to visit one, I’d recommend prioritising The Breakers. It’s the largest and most impressive mansion, and gives you the best overall sense of the scale and opulence of Newport’s historic homes.
🎟️ The Breakers: Entry Ticket – Admission to The Breakers, with options to include one or two additional historic properties.
That said, if you have time to visit more than one, I’d highly recommend adding Marble House as well. When I visited in mid-November, the mansions had started to be decorated for Christmas, which made the interiors feel even more atmospheric — and Marble House ended up being a personal favourite of the two.
There are 11 mansions in total managed by the Preservation Society, and you can purchase either single-entry tickets or combination passes for better value. Most tickets include an audio guide, which takes around 40 minutes and allows you to explore at your own pace.
Last entry is usually around 4:00 PM, so if you’re planning to visit more than one mansion, you’ll need to keep an eye on the time.

5:00 PM – Dinner in Newport
Head back into town to finish your day with dinner. Newport has plenty of great restaurants, and this is a good opportunity to try some local seafood dishes around the wharf area.
If you’re not quite ready to call it a night, you can also choose to do a ghost tour around the town centre, which is a surprisingly engaging way to learn more about the city’s past. The stories are just eerie enough to be entertaining without feeling over-the-top, and it’s a nice way to stretch your day into the evening.
👻 Newport Olde Town Ghost Walk – Evening walking tour through Newport’s historic streets, sharing local ghost stories and dark history at landmarks like Trinity Church and White Horse Tavern.
