Wellington might be New Zealand’s capital, but it feels more like a laid-back coastal town than a political hub.

Wedged between the sea and steep green hills at the southern tip of the North Island, it’s compact, walkable, and packed with personality.

I’ve visited Wellington twice now, and even with just one day each time, I was surprised by how much I managed to see and do. Between excellent coffee, waterfront walks, panoramic viewpoints, and famous film locations, there’s no shortage of things to do in Wellington.

If you’re short on time and wondering how to make the most of it, this Wellington 1 day itinerary focuses on the city’s highlights at a relaxed pace. If you’re planning a trip around New Zealand and will be stopping in at the nation’s capital, here’s how to spend one perfect day in Wellington, New Zealand!

Quick summary:
Only have one day in Wellington? This easy itinerary covers the waterfront, cable car and Botanic Gardens, Mount Victoria lookout, Lord of the Rings filming locations, and Cuba Street nightlife — perfect for first-time visitors short on time.

Walk along Wellington’s waterfront & explore downtown

Downtown Wellington is fairly compact and easy to explore on foot. Starting along Wellington Harbour is the perfect way to ease into the city, with a scenic boardwalk, grassy picnic spots, public art installations, and shipping-container food vendors drawing both locals and visitors.

I loved watching teenagers jump off the pier into the water below and wandering past the quirky sculptures dotted along the waterfront. It’s a great place for people-watching and soaking up Wellington’s relaxed vibe.

From here, head inland to Parliament House to see the oddly shaped Beehive, part of the Parliament House complex. Opened in 1977, it houses the executive wing of New Zealand’s government, and free guided tours run daily between 10am and 4pm.

🚌 If you’d rather cover Wellington’s highlights with minimal effort, the Wellington Guided City Tour is an excellent option for the morning. This three-hour guided tour departs at 9:30am and includes key attractions such as Mount Victoria Lookout and the Botanic Gardens.

Ride the Wellington Cable Car to the Botanic Gardens

If you’re exploring independently, hop on the iconic Wellington Cable Car to reach the hilltop above the city. The views over the harbour are fantastic, stretching across the bay to the surrounding hills on a clear day.

At the top, you’ll find the Wellington Botanic Gardens, which are free to enter and well worth a wander. This expansive green space features walking trails, glasshouses, an observatory, and a treetop visitor centre.

When you’re finished, you can either catch the cable car back down or enjoy a gentle downhill stroll via the City to Sea Walkway — which is what I chose and thoroughly enjoyed.

🚌 A Wellington City Tour includes the cable car ticket and collects you from the top, making it easy to combine a morning of sightseeing with the gardens if you don’t want to navigate transport yourself.

Head up to Mount Victoria Lookout for panoramic views

Mount Victoria Lookout offers some of the best 360-degree views in the city, with sweeping panoramas over Wellington, the harbour, and the airport runway.

I walked up from downtown and found it to be a fairly long climb, with bush trails that weren’t especially friendly for city shoes. If you’d rather skip the uphill walk, Mount Victoria is included as a photo stop on the guided city tour — a much easier way to enjoy the view, especially if you’re short on time.

Discover Lord of the Rings filming locations & visit Wētā Workshop

Even if you’re not a hardcore fan, Wellington’s connection to The Lord of the Rings is hard to miss. Several scenes from the trilogy were filmed around the city, including locations on the slopes of Mount Victoria.

🎬 For a deeper dive into Wellington’s film legacy, a visit to Wētā Workshop Experiences is well worth your time. This guided behind-the-scenes tour takes you into the creative home base responsible for props, creatures, costumes, and physical effects used in The Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit, Avatar, and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.

You’ll learn how iconic movie elements were designed and built, get hands-on with pieces from different departments, and see artists at work. It’s a fascinating look at how Wellington became one of the world’s most important filmmaking hubs — even if fantasy films aren’t usually your thing.

🧙 If you’d prefer to focus entirely on filming locations around the city and region, a Lord of the Rings Half-Day Tour is another great option. I did one on my first visit to Wellington and had a lot of fun visiting exact filming spots and re-enacting scenes with the help of a knowledgeable local guide.

Spend the evening on Cuba Street

When evening rolls around, make your way to Cuba Street, Wellington’s most vibrant dining and nightlife strip. This lively area is packed with trendy restaurants, bars, and live music, and it’s where the city really comes alive after dark.

On Fridays and Saturdays, there’s also a popular night market with stalls selling a wide range of street food. If you’re visiting over the weekend, it’s well worth timing your evening to catch it.

Is one day in Wellington enough?

One day in Wellington is just enough to see the city’s main highlights and get a taste of its relaxed, creative vibe. While you could easily fill a longer stay with day trips and food experiences, a well-planned one-day Wellington itinerary lets you cover the waterfront, viewpoints, and key attractions.

If you have more than one day in Wellington, it might be worth picking up a Wellington car rental to explore the stunning surroundings and nearby attractions.
